Discover the town of Chinchón. What to see and how to get there.

Visiting Chinchón is a unique experience. Chinchón has a long and illustrious history full of curiosities, which is why it can be said that it is one of the most famous towns in the Community of Madrid. Chinchón is now in splendor after a history of invasions and reconquests, manors and French persecution during the War of Independence (1808-1814). Alfonso XII constituted it as a city in 1916, and it was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1974. If you want to visit Chinchón in Madrid, remember that at Hnos. Montoya we make it possible.

Discover what to see in Chinchón and why it is so famous

1.Main Square

The main attraction of Chinchón is its large Plaza Mayor, which serves as the nerve center of the city. It is a medieval square with several entrances and an irregular shape. It was built in the 234th and XNUMXth centuries and its XNUMX balconies have green bars. It is the ideal place to meet for a drink or eat on one of its numerous terraces.

However, it is also the scene of most of the town's festivities. During the patron saint festivities in mid-August, for example, the Plaza Mayor de Chinchón becomes a bullring. And near the end of February, there is a major medieval market with parades, tournaments and, at night, live music.

2.Clock Tower

The Church of Our Lady of Grace was practically destroyed during the War of Independence, at the beginning of the XNUMXth century, leaving only its tower. Today it stands out in the upper part of Chinchón as a mirror and emblem of the past. In the neighborhood there is a well-known saying that says: "Chinchón has a tower without a church, and a church without a tower."

3.Castle of the Counts

The Castle of the Counts, located on the outskirts of the town and less than ten minutes' walk from the Plaza Mayor, is another must-see in Chinchón. The III Count of Chinchón built it in the XNUMXth century on the foundations of another castle from the previous century. During the War of Independence, they were attacked and burned, and their final use was as a factory for alcoholic beverages.

Today, it is a castle in ruins, with little care and almost completely exposed to inclement weather. As a result, its interior is not accessible, despite its charming appearance. To get here, you must first get around the barrier that surrounds it.

4. Chinchón viewpoint

The Plaza de Galaz is located at the foot of the Clock Tower and offers some of the best views of Chinchón. From there, you will be able to capture one of the most iconic photos of the town, with the Castle of the Counts on the horizon. An incomparable place to take a break and have fun, as well as instilling jealousy in those who have not yet been able to visit it.

5. Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

After more than a century of construction, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, the most outstanding religious sanctuary in Chinchón, was finally completed in 1626. From the Plaza Mayor you can contemplate its spectacular plan, as if you had been observing life of the people at all times.

Inside, several architectural styles stand out, such as Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. The jewel of the temple, however, is a work by the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya, "The Assumption of the Virgin", a painting made around 1812 at the request of his brother, then parish priest of the church.

6. La Posada Ethnological Museum

This private museum is a stone's throw from the Plaza Mayor and is housed in an old inn from the early XNUMXth century. Even if you don't want to enter the museum, it is recommended to see the inner courtyard of the building, which is really attractive.

The museum displays a wide range of historical artifacts, equipment, technology, and features, the most common of which provide insight into what life was like in the region over the years.
