Tips for Traveling by Bus in Winter

One of the best seasons to travel and enjoy picturesque snowy landscapes is winter. This time brings magic to many areas, despite the fact that many people avoid the cold at this time of the year in search of warmer climates. We know that not all people dare to travel in winter with their cars. For this reason, at Hnos. Montoya we offer you to travel by bus in winter. So you can continue enjoying the winter paradise that you love so much.

Going by bus can cause you some insecurities such as: what to take, if the suitcase fits, what clothes to include in your suitcase... If you take into account some tips for going on vacation or making short trips in this season of the year, you will be able to have the best trip of your life and live an unforgettable experience.

Here are the best tips for traveling by bus in winter so that you don't miss anything.

Take this on your winter bus trips

1. Dress with different layers

Quality trumps quantity when layering. What in Spain we usually call “putting layers on top”. That way we can adjust to the temperature. Since, traveling by bus, either in the middle of winter or at Christmas, it can mean that you are cold when you get off or hot inside the bus.

To wear fewer layers and have better mobility, make sure that each layer of clothing you wear is warm and of good quality. Keep in mind that the layers should not be too far apart and should be placed from thinnest (i.e. closest to the skin) to thickest.

It is best to dress in layers that can be taken on and off as needed. This way you will avoid getting too hot as soon as you enter a shopping center or a museum, for example, due to the heating they may have. Remember that the temperature can change throughout the day, so being able to add or remove items from your wardrobe will be of great help.

2. Keep your hands and feet warm for winter travel

Hands and feet are the most sensitive parts of the body to the cold, so if you're going to spend money on something, make sure it will keep them warm. For feet, we advise you to wear a small woolen sock under a larger one.

If you have decided to travel in winter to snowy areas, you can play in the snow for as long as you want if you have waterproof gloves. You can buy some very resistant waterproof gloves that, according to the label, can withstand temperatures as low as -2 degrees.

However, on some days when we are just walking around the city, you can also use finer ones with plush interiors. Although they are not waterproof, they allow you to use the touch screen of your phone (Google Maps is vital when you are in a new city). Tip: check the weather before starting your bus trip.

Use winter boots, waterproof and closed, that are comfortable so that you can enjoy and not suffer when walking on the terrain that you have chosen. Your feet are one of the parts of the body that you should take care of the most.

And if you have made the decision to go hiking, do your research on what type of footwear is best for you to be able to walk on snowy routes once you leave your bus trip.

3. Thermal pants or leggings. Comfort for bus trips in winter

Jeans protect very little from the cold. In fact, they seem to absorb it and it's hard to warm up to them. The best thing you can do is dress your normal pants with leggings or thermal clothing. The leggings alone will make you feel very comfortable.

4. Earmuffs or hats when exiting the bus

You can use a hat or earmuffs to protect your head, especially your ears. Some hats even include thermal fabric inside, which is a nice feature.

5. Travel by bus knowing the weather

Traveling by bus in winter is very comfortable because you don't have to worry about the asphalt, or whether you have to wear chains on the wheels of the car or not. However, we are aware that traveling by bus involves some planning and the "just in case" cannot be that many. Therefore, check in advance the climate of the area to which you will travel in winter: temperatures below zero, rain, pleasant weather, etc.

Add the cities you are going to visit to the weather app on your mobile and be sure to check the weather patterns for the days you will be there.

6. Know your limits

We advise you to go with caution if it is your first experience in a very cold climate and you are not sure of your tolerance for low temperatures. This way you will avoid unwanted memories.

Before heading into well-below-zero temperatures, you can travel to a location that's best suited for you. Thus, you will gradually experience the low temperatures and you will be aware of your limit.

7. If you travel by bus, take what you need

To be warm, it is not necessary to dress excessively, but to pack sensibly and bring the right clothes, in addition, this will be very helpful on the bus. To walk comfortably without getting cold and without looking like a Michelin man, we recommend wearing good quality thermal and waterproof clothing that can be layered and is of a reasonable thickness.

If you are going to spend a few days in one place, you can use your suitcase or backpack. If this is not the case, as we have told you in the first tips…wear comfortable and quality clothing to avoid wearing too many clothes.

8. Plan your activities well

Winter does not put obstacles to the most daring. But we are aware that bathing on the coast is more desirable in summer, in the same way that skiing is not usually done at this time. So choose for your winter vacation activities that you can do just about anywhere the season takes you.

This will help you stay calm if you can't do what you had planned. Enjoy the beautiful landscapes that winter offers, the local gastronomy or the history of the area. A trip to a spa is also relaxing in any season.
