The Pilar Festival in Zaragoza 2023

The Pilar Festivals in Zaragoza are an immersion in the rich culture and heritage of Spain. These festivals, held every year in the month of October in honor of the Virgen del Pilar, patron saint of Zaragoza, are a world-renowned cultural and tourist event that attracts visitors from all over. Let's delve even deeper into the history, celebrations and tourist atmosphere surrounding these festivals and how to attend.

History and Spirituality

The history of the Pilar Festival dates back to the dawn of Christianity. Legend has it that in the year 40 AD, the Virgin Mary appeared to the apostle Saint James the Greater on the banks of the Ebro River. As proof of her visit, she left a jasper column, which would later become the central column of the majestic Pilar Basilica. This miracle gave rise to the devotion to the Virgin of Pilar and established the basis of these unique festivities. However, choosing the celebration date was a challenge.

After achieving devotion to the Virgen del Pilar, the challenge was posed to ensure that the people of Zaragoza lived the festival with the same passion as Corpus Christi, a festival already rooted in the city. However, a new dilemma arose regarding the date. The legend placed the appearance of the Virgin Mary in Zaragoza on January 2, in the middle of the Aragonese winter, which posed problems due to the inclement weather. It was necessary to choose a more favorable day for the celebration.

Finally, October 12 was chosen, a date that coincided with the arrival of Christopher Columbus to America. This choice was not a coincidence, since it sought to establish a deeper connection between the Aragonese and the idea of a united and imperial Spain, promoted by the Bourbon dynasty. In 1729, the Pope Clement XII made October 12 official as the day of the celebration of Our Lady of Pilar. Later, in 1807, the Pope Pius VII officially granted the festivity of the Virgen del Pilar. This change of date marked a milestone in the history of the Pilar Festival and contributed to its roots as one of the most prominent religious and cultural events in Spain.
